We FINALLY finished our video about our sail from Texas to Belize.
A little update of what we are currently up to...
We are still in Guatemala. Specifically, the Rio Dulce, which is a river that runs 20 miles inland from the ocean. The mountains provide really great protection during hurricane season, so we'll be here until November-ish. We don't have any solid plans yet for what comes next. We're just enjoying the summer here in this low key river oasis. We have been at anchor the whole time, which means we take our dinghy to and from shore anytime we need or want to go to land. Or sometimes we just take it up through the winding little waterways off the main river to find the howler monkeys (in a video coming soon!) and toucans. We've also been making friends, getting involved in the sailing/cruising community, and volunteering a bit. In true Becca fashion, she has spotted a stray dog that appears to be in need of help, so we're sure we'll be attempting a rescue effort of sorts in the near future.
Here's a typical day for us:
We wake up sometime between 5a and 6a when the sun rises. We lounge around and sip on some coffee. Maybe read part of a book, head out for an early paddleboard, or attempt to get the internet to check the news and weather. At 7:30a, we tune into the VHF radio to listen to the local cruisers net, which provides updates on weather, tides, local events, lunch specials, and offers cruisers a chance to connect to each other, including offering items for sale or asking if anyone has a spare part you need. If it's Mon, Wed, or Fri, Becca heads off to the free yoga that is offered under a palapa overlooking the water. She gets back around 9:30am and we may grocery shop after breakfast or go out and explore some new place. Keith usually heads off to help a new friend or two on a boat project. Becca generally plays the ukulele, organizes photos, edits a video, or takes care of Lenny, the affectionately named, but very needy, sourdough starter. Some days it gets too hot and we both end up overboard for a quick swim. Lunch may be at one of the nearby restaurants for a special we heard about on the VHF in the morning and the rest of the afternoon is generally spent socializing or relaxing, sometimes with a beer or a rum ;) If it's Monday, we'll head off to Margarita Monday with all the other sailors in the Rio Dulce at 4pm. Dinner is usually back on the boat, then we're in bed watching tv and passing out by 9p. Rough life, we know!
We'll be sure to put together videos and photos of both our time in Belize, as well as here in Guatemala. We're excited to share as much of it as possible!
Thanks to everyone who has emailed us with your own life updates. It's been so fun to stay up-to-date. Please continue to do so! We love hearing from you and it helps us stay close with those we are close to.
Much love,
Keith & Becca
