The Journey
What is it that fuels you? For us, it’s travel, adventure, and experiencing something new, whether it's a new food, new friendship, new landscape, or a new culture. And now, documenting all of that for our future selves, while sharing it with you along the way, adds to the experience.
Join us as we wander around the globe on our electric 1979 Pearson 424 sailboat. Take a look around; perhaps you’ll discover what exhilarates you as well.
The Boat
The reality - it's not just a boat. It's our home. Our transportation. Our avenue into a life of exploration.
Vagari is a 42 foot sailboat built in Rhode Island back in 1979. She has a few more years under her keel than we have birthday candles on a cake. We suspect, she has a bit more wisdom too. She seems to anticipate the seas and winds.
When we discovered her in 2018, she was in need of help. Nearly beyond repair. After pouring everything into her over the following 3 years - labor, money, love - she came to life. She has already managed to pay us back ten-fold.
Vagari is unique. She is over 40 years old, yet equipped with some of the latest technology. She is propelled by two 10kW electric motors that are powered by 18kW of LiFiPo4 batteries, which are recharged via solar panels, a wind generator, and hydro regeneration. She also has a diesel generator onboard allowing her to have diesel-electric propulsion as needed. Her navigation and instruments are all streamlined to communicate on ipads. She has bluetooth speakers throughout the cabins and cockpit allowing us to enjoy music as we cruise. She has refrigeration, a freezer, an icemaker. Her galley is equipped with propane and electric cooking options. She can turn saltwater into safe drinking water at 7 gallons an hour. We truly do not go without. She provides us with everything we need.
The Crew
Keith, a previous healthcare consultant and entrepreneur turned competent boatwright, is the catalyst for this adventure. Having previously sailed from Massachusetts to Australia and having lived on a sailboat in New Zealand, the saltwater is in his veins.
Becca, a former urgent care pediatrician who worked her way up to hospital leadership and administration, walked away from the corporate life for her one true passion - travel. With her school loans paid off, there was finally nothing in her way.
Bosun, a stray island pup now boat dog. From rolling in the sand on the beach, paddleboarding, dinghy rides, and hiking mountains, plus with his only responsibility being to keep a watchful eye over the boat and his crewmates, this pup sure is living the dream.
