Greetings from St. Vincent and the Grenadines!
Sounds like a band name, right?! In any case, we finally left Martinique. You pretty much had to pull us away, but it was time to move on. We felt the Grenadines calling us and we are not disappointed.
We wrapped up our boat projects and stuffed the boat with delicious French foods, then sailed south just shy of 100 nautical miles. Can you believe we had a beam reach passage for the first time since leaving Texas?! We surely were overdue. We left Martinique on Thursday, August 18 around noon and we were flying! Winds were 15-20 knots out of the ENE. We decided to pass St. Lucia and St. Vincent on the windward side to avoid any wind shadows. With the consistent winds on the beam or just aft, we were smoking at 6-7 knots. Next thing we know, we are outside Blue Lagoon, St. Vincent 15 hours later in the wee hours of the morning. We killed some time outside the bay by tacking back and forth until the sun came up and we could safely see the entrance. We dropped anchor and took a lovely nap as it was much too early to complete formalities.
We arrived in Blue Lagoon not because we were keen to spend time there, but because it was our only option for a port of arrival with Bosun. To legally import Bosun into the country, we needed to meet with the government vet and Blue Lagoon is the only port they will complete this step. Once officials strolled in throughout the late hours of the morning, we met with customs & immigration for ourselves and the boat, then with the vet for Bosun. Easy enough. We then pulled up the anchor and sailed 8 nautical miles south to Admiralty Bay, Bequia, where we are currently.
It's been lovely here! We were fortunate enough to meet another young sailing couple in Martinique with two dogs. Bosun adores their pups and vice versa, so we were happy to hear they wanted to sail to Bequia too. We now have puppy beach play dates here in Bequia in the mornings. It actually seems to be a boat dog's playground as just about every morning you can see a group of pups being dinghied to the beach for playtime. Bosun has made many friends and has now been asking to go to shore in the mornings by wimpering in the cockpit or jumping into the dinghy when he sees other dogs going to shore.
The plan for now is to island hop around the Grenadines over the next couple of weeks, then head further south to Grenada to haul the boat out of the water to apply bottom paint. Boy, does she need it?! We've been scrubbing a reef off of her every now and again.
Luckily, we found some good internet here on Bequia and were able to upload another video that we’ve been sitting on for weeks. You can find it on the Videos tab here on the website with all the other videos or by clicking below.
Thanks for all the emails. It's been great to keep in touch! Hope everyone enjoys the last few weeks of summer!
Much love,
Keith & Becca
